Complete Drone Building Guide

Building Your First FPV Drone

FPV (First Person View) drones offer immersive flying experience with real-time video feed to goggles. Building your own quad provides performance customization impossible with ready-to-fly models. Choose frame size based on use: 3" for indoor flying, 5" for freestyle/racing (most popular), 7" for long-range cruising. Smaller = more agile but shorter flight time.

Essential components: Frame (carbon fiber for strength/weight), 4x brushless motors (2200-2600KV for 5" builds), ESCs (Electronic Speed Controllers, typically 4-in-1 board 35-50A), flight controller (F4/F7 processor with gyro), FPV camera and video transmitter, radio receiver, battery (4S or 6S LiPo), and propellers. Total cost €250-500 depending on component quality.

Flight Controllers & Firmware

Modern flight controllers use F4, F7, or H7 processors running Betaflight firmware (open-source, constantly updated). Built-in gyroscope detects drone orientation and movement. Integrated OSD (On-Screen Display) shows battery voltage, flight time, and telemetry on FPV video feed. USB connection for configuration via Betaflight Configurator.

Advanced features: GPS for return-to-home and position hold, barometer for altitude hold, blackbox logging for flight analysis. DJI O3 Air Unit integrates flight controller with digital HD video system. ArduPilot/PX4 firmware enables autonomous missions for aerial photography or mapping.

Motors and ESCs

Brushless motors rated by size (2207 = 22mm diameter, 07mm height) and KV (RPM per volt). Higher KV = more speed but less torque and shorter battery life. For 5" freestyle: 2200-2600KV on 4S, 1700-2000KV on 6S. Quality brands like T-Motor, XING, or iFlight ensure reliability and smooth performance.

ESCs convert battery DC power to motor AC, varying speed based on flight controller signals. 4-in-1 ESCs save weight and reduce wiring compared to individual ESCs. BLHeli_32 firmware supports DShot protocol (digital signal, faster response than PWM). Choose 30-40A for typical 5" builds, 50-65A for 6S high-power setups. Built-in current sensor enables precise battery monitoring.

FPV Video Systems

Analog FPV: Traditional system using 5.8GHz video transmitter (VTX) broadcasting to goggles. Latency ~20ms, suitable for racing. 25mW for indoor, 200-600mW for outdoor (check local regulations). RHCP antennas reduce interference. Camera choice: CCD for low light, CMOS for daylight. Resolution 600-1200 TVL. Budget-friendly but lower image quality than digital.

Digital FPV: DJI O3 or HDZero systems provide HD video (1080p) with 28-40ms latency. Stunning image quality and longer range (10+ km with proper antennas). More expensive (€400-600 for air unit + goggles) but transformative experience. Some racers prefer analog's lower latency; freestylers love digital's clarity for cinematic footage.

Frames and Propellers

Carbon fiber frames balance strength and weight. Thickness: 3-4mm for freestyle (durability), 5-6mm for racing (rigidity). Frame design affects performance: X configuration standard, stretched X for smoother flight, dead cat for better prop clearance. Top plates protect electronics, side plates shield motors. Modular designs allow easy repairs.

Propellers hugely impact performance. 3-blade: efficient, longer flight time. 4-blade: more responsive, better for freestyle tricks. 5/6-blade: maximum grip, power-hungry. Pitch (e.g., 5x4.3x3 = 5" diameter, 4.3" pitch, 3-blade) determines thrust vs. efficiency. Stock up on props - you'll break many learning! TPU 3D-printed camera mounts, bumpers, and antenna holders protect expensive components.

Batteries and Chargers

LiPo batteries provide high discharge rates needed for aggressive flying. 4S (14.8V nominal) standard for 5" drones, 6S (22.2V) for more power. Capacity vs. weight tradeoff: 1300-1500mAh for 5" gives 4-6 minute flights. Higher C-rating (discharge rate) = better performance under load. 100C typical for racing. XT60 connectors standard.

Smart chargers essential: balance charge individual cells, prevent overcharging (fire hazard). ISDT, SkyRC popular brands. Parallel charging boards charge multiple batteries simultaneously. Storage charge (3.8V per cell) for unused batteries. Always use LiPo safety bag. Never leave charging unattended. Proper battery care extends lifespan and prevents dangerous situations.

Radio Systems

Radio transmitter (TX) sends control signals; receiver (RX) on drone decodes them. Popular protocols: FrSky (reliable, EU-friendly), ExpressLRS (long-range, low latency, open-source), TBS Crossfire (professional long-range). 2.4GHz standard but 900MHz available for extreme range (20+ km).

RadioMaster TX16S excellent transmitter (€180) with OpenTX firmware supporting all protocols via modules. Gimbals determine control feel; Hall-effect sensors last longer than potentiometers. Min 8 channels (throttle, yaw, pitch, roll, arm, flight mode, plus extras for camera tilt, LED control). ELRS RX modules tiny and lightweight, perfect for racing builds.

Custom Build Service

Not ready to build yourself? Our technicians assemble custom drones to your specifications. Choose components, we build and tune it. Includes Betaflight configuration, PID tuning for optimal flight characteristics, and test flight. Typical build time 3-5 days. Service fee €100-150 depending on complexity.

We also offer repair service for crashed drones. Common repairs: motor replacement, ESC replacement, frame arm replacement, camera/VTX replacement. Diagnostics €30, then quote for parts and labor. Usually cheaper than buying new drone. Contact our FPV team with photos and damage description for initial assessment.
