Electronic Components Guide

Building Your Electronics Inventory

Every electronics lab needs core components for prototyping. Start with resistor kit (1Ω to 10MΩ, E12 or E24 series), capacitor assortment (10pF to 1000μF), common transistors (2N2222, BC547, 2N7000), and basic ICs (555 timer, 7805 regulator, LM358 op-amp). This foundation handles 80% of simple circuits. Cost ~€50 for complete starter kit.

Expand with sensors (temperature, motion, light), communication modules (WiFi, Bluetooth), displays (OLED, LCD), and microcontroller boards (Arduino, ESP32). Organize components in labeled storage boxes. SMD components save space but require soldering skills and tools. Through-hole parts better for beginners and breadboard prototyping.

Passive Components

Resistors limit current, divide voltage, and terminate signals. Color bands indicate value and tolerance: 4-band for 5% tolerance, 5-band for 1%. Power rating typically 1/4W (standard), 1/2W for higher currents. SMD resistors marked with codes (e.g., 103 = 10kΩ). Stock common values: 220Ω (LED current limiting), 1kΩ, 4.7kΩ, 10kΩ (pull-ups/pull-downs), 100kΩ.

Capacitors store charge, filter noise, and couple signals. Ceramic caps (10pF-1μF) for decoupling and high-frequency filtering. Electrolytic caps (1μF-1000μF+) for power supply smoothing - observe polarity! Voltage rating must exceed circuit voltage (safety margin 1.5-2x). ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) matters for high-frequency applications. Tantalum caps offer smaller size but higher cost.

Semiconductors & ICs

Transistors amplify or switch signals. BJT (Bipolar Junction Transistor): NPN (2N2222, BC547) and PNP (2N3906, BC557) for general purpose. MOSFETs handle higher currents with minimal control power: N-channel (2N7000, IRF520) for switching loads, P-channel for high-side switching. Understand pinout (gate, source, drain) before connecting - incorrect wiring destroys transistors instantly.

Voltage regulators provide stable power: 7805 (5V), 7812 (12V) linear regulators simple but inefficient, switch-mode (LM2596, LM7805) more efficient especially with large voltage drops. Op-amps (LM358, TL072) amplify analog signals for sensor interfaces. 555 timer generates pulses, frequencies, delays. Stock multiple pieces - mistakes happen!

Microcontrollers & Development Boards

Arduino boards (Uno, Nano, Mega) offer beginner-friendly programming with huge community support. Perfect for learning and simple projects. ESP32/ESP8266 add WiFi/Bluetooth at similar price, ideal for IoT. STM32 boards (Blue Pill, Black Pill) provide powerful ARM processors for advanced applications. All programmable via USB, extensive libraries available.

Raspberry Pi runs full Linux OS, handles complex tasks like image processing, web servers, databases. Not real-time like microcontrollers but vastly more processing power. Combine both: Raspberry Pi for intelligence, Arduino for hardware interfacing. Communication via serial, I2C, or SPI. Our development board selection includes clones (cheap experimentation) and genuine boards (professional projects).

Sensors for Every Application

Temperature: DHT11 (±2°C accuracy, digital), DHT22 (±0.5°C, better), DS18B20 (waterproof, 1-Wire protocol), thermocouples (extreme temps up to 1000°C). Humidity combined in DHT sensors. Pressure sensors (BMP280, BME280) also measure altitude. Applications: weather stations, HVAC control, industrial monitoring.

Motion: PIR (Passive Infrared) detects human movement for security/automation. Ultrasonic (HC-SR04) measures distance 2cm-4m, perfect for obstacle avoidance. IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) combines accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer for orientation tracking in drones and robots. MPU6050 popular and affordable. Light sensors: LDR (simple analog), BH1750 (digital lux meter). Gas sensors detect CO2, smoke, alcohol, VOCs.

Displays & User Interface

Character LCDs (16x2, 20x4) display text, cheap and easy to interface (I2C backpack available). OLED displays (0.96", 1.3") offer crisp graphics with wide viewing angles, no backlight needed. TFT color displays (1.8" to 7") enable rich user interfaces with touch capability. E-paper displays ultra-low power for battery applications.

Input devices: buttons, switches, rotary encoders, potentiometers for analog control. Membrane keypads (3x4, 4x4) for numeric entry. Capacitive touch sensors (TTP223) for modern interfaces. Joysticks for game controllers and robot control. Combine with displays to create complete user interfaces for projects.

Communication Modules

WiFi modules: ESP8266 (basic, 2.4GHz only), ESP32 (dual-core, Bluetooth, preferred). Connect projects to internet for IoT applications, remote monitoring, data logging to cloud. Bluetooth: HC-05/HC-06 classic Bluetooth for serial communication, HM-10 BLE for low-power devices. Pair with smartphone apps.

Long-range: LoRa modules (RFM95, SX1276) communicate 2-10km with minimal power, perfect for remote sensors. NRF24L01 2.4GHz transceivers for short-range wireless (100m). GSM/GPRS modules (SIM800L) send SMS and connect to cellular internet anywhere. GPS modules (NEO-6M, NEO-8M) for location tracking. Choose protocol based on range, power, and bandwidth requirements.

BOM Sourcing Service

Designing custom PCB? Send us your Bill of Materials (BOM) for sourcing quote. We stock most common components and can procure specialized parts. Minimum order €50, discounts on quantities. Typical turnaround 3-5 days for in-stock items, 2-3 weeks for special order components.

We verify component specifications against your design, suggest substitutes for obsolete parts, and flag potential issues before you order. Value-added services: pre-cut resistor/capacitor strips for assembly, component programming (microcontrollers), and kitting (organizing parts per assembly). Email BOM spreadsheet (part numbers, quantities) to components@robotics-3d.com.
